THE WALKING CITY
Boston’s natural beauty is enticing, especially in spring, when the city undergoes an environmental awakening, blossoming into a stunning panoply of flowers, greenery and natural life. This is the perfect time to be outdoors.
The historic port and harbor islands are magical from dawn to dusk, with flocks of birds flying overhead and tugboats churning upstream. Three rivers running through greater Boston - the Charles, Mystic and Neponset - offer fishing, boating and environmental tours.
Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace, a string of parks and open spaces encircling the city, brings you to historic neighborhoods like the Fens, Jamaica Plain, and Dorchester’s Franklin Park, replete with a zoo, golf course, playing fields and nature trails.
Boston Common, the nation’s oldest public park (1632) is a perfect place to people watch, while the Public Garden (1837) is home to the iconic Swan boats in the lagoon. The Rose F. Kennedy Greenway (2008-pictured below) offers 28 acres of parkland running along Boston Harbor, dotted with fountains, murals, memorials, food courts, a brewery and a magnificent carousel.
And finally, Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park is an oasis minutes from downtown. These 34 unique islands and peninsulas are full of nature, history, tours and picnic areas, perfect for a day trip.

TAKE A WALKING TOUR
Put on your walking shoes and explore Boston’s storied history and heritage, with historic trails both guided and self-guided. The Freedom Trail, Women’s History Trail, Black Heritage Trail and Irish Heritage Trail are popular walks. A good place to get tour information and free maps is at the Visitor Center on Boston Common.
DINE OUT BOSTON
One of the best reasons to be in Boston this time of year is the Annual Dine Out Boston. From March 12-25 choose from dozens of amazing restaurants, cafés, pubs and hotels. Select your favorite neighborhood or cuisine style, and make your reservation, it’s as simple as that.
FENWAY PARK
Opening day at Fenway Park is March 30, when the beloved Boston Red Sox take on the Baltimore Oriels. Grab a season schedule and cheer on the home team.
BOSTON SYMPHONY HALL
Home of the world-famous Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops, Symphony Hall is bursting with music in the spring, as BSO Conductor Andris Nelsons and Pops Maestro Keith Lockhart bring to life some of the greatest music ever composed!
