One of the most evocative and thrilling outdoor music venues in the world is located in the tiny town of Lenox in Western Massachusetts. The Tanglewood Music Center, summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, dates back to 1936, and has become a cherished and prestigious stop for performers of classical music, as well as other musical genres such as baroque, jazz, folk, Broadway and film scores.

Tony Fogg, William I. Bernell Artistic Administrator of the BSO since 1994 and Director of Tanglewood since 2016, understands the magical qualities of the musical venue.

“The listening environment of Tanglewood is a unique one, a combination of physical beauty and great performances that makes it like no other place.”

Indeed, this summer’s classical repertoire, led by BSO Conductor Andris Nelsons, includes musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, Ann-Sophie Mutter and Simon O’Neill, performing works by Wagner, Mahler, Beethoven, Dvorak and Schumann.

Other conductors at Tanglewood this summer include Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart, guest conductors David Newman and John Williams, Pops conductor from 1980 to 1993.

In fact, there are three performances at Tanglewood this summer celebrating the Pops’ laureate conductor Williams and his art: “Across the Stars: Music of John Williams” features soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter and conductor David Newman on July 7; Star Wars: A New Hope, a film presentation with live orchestra is led by Conductor Keith Lockhart on July 16; and “John Williams’ Film Night” hosted by Maestro Williams himself and conducted by David Newman on August 24.

“John Williams is such a beloved figure at Tanglewood,” says Fogg. “We want to take every opportunity we can to celebrate his work.”

Additionally, there’s a terrific line-up of popular artists coming to Tanglewood this summer, such as Josh Groban, James Taylor, Richard Thompson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Gladys Knight, Trombone Shorty and Reba McEntire.
