IRELAND - A GOLFER'S PARADISE
SUMMER 2013

You’ve heard about the great Irish golfers of our time - Padraig Harrington, Graeme McDowell, Darren Clarke, Paul McGinley and Rory McIlroy – and their prominence poses the question of why Ireland breeds so many great golfers? Perhaps it’s the fact that you’re never more than 20 miles from a golf course in all of Ireland, and golfing is a sport not just for the elite but for the working man and woman as well.

Ballybunion Golf Course, Co. Kerry

Ireland also boasts some of the world’s best links courses. The term links in the United States simply refers to a golf outing, but in Ireland and the UK links refer to golf courses that are built on coastal strips of land between the beaches and the inland, offering wonderful vistas and challenging shots. In Northern Ireland famous links courses include the Royal Portrush and Royal County Down, and in the Republic of Ireland you’ll find Old Head in County Cork, Ballybunion, Lahinch, Doonbeg, Rosses Point, Portmarnock and the European Club.

Whether you’re a duffer or a professional, there’s plenty of great golf in Ireland, here are three special events taking place this summer as part of The Gathering celebrations.

On July 4-5 the inaugural Senators Cup Golf Tournament takes place at Luttrellstown Castle Golf and Country Club and Royal Dublin Golf Course. Hosted by Irish Senator Eamonn Coghlan and his colleagues, the event gets off to an early start on July 3 with a private tour of the Leinster House and a welcome reception at the National Museum on Kildare Street in Dublin. Following the tournament is an awards dinner at Dublin Castle on July 5 attended by Ireland’s Taoiseach Enda Kenny and other government officials.

Wicklow Golf Club

Isle Inn Tours in Alexandria, VA, is offering a Southwest Ireland Golf Foursome through September, 2013. It’s an amazing package promising six rounds of golf with guaranteed tee-times at some of Ireland’s most challenging and scenic courses, including Ballybunion (Old Course and Cashen Course) and Ring of Kerry, including Dingle (Ceann Sibeal), Dooks Golf Club, Ring of Kerry Golf Club and Killarney Mahony’s Point. The package includes six nights at the exception Killeen House Hotel, a mini-van for a week, green fees and full Irish breakfast.

The Gathering Golf Classic takes place on July 14-18 at The K Club in Kildare, venue of the Ryder Cup held in Ireland in 2006. Supported by Tourism Ireland, the four-day Golf Classic includes four rounds of golf on the K Club’s two championship golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer; luxury hotel accommodation, plus a cocktail party, gala dinner, daily breakfast, and a program of events for spouses and non-golfers. These include visits to the National Stud farm in Kildare and Kildare Village, a trip to Dublin and Trinity College, fly fishing on the River Liffey and treatments at the K Spa.
